Citations and sources

AI assistants build their answers from web pages. Citations shows which ones, so you know where your brand needs to be. Open Visibility → Citations.

Domains and pages

Two tables list every cited site and page with how many answers cite it and which assistants. Each site has a type and each page a kind:

  • Site types: Your site, Competitor, Editorial, Forums and reviews, Reference, Company site, Other.
  • Page kinds: Listicle, Comparison, Review, Profile, Forum thread, Article, Docs, Other.

What kinds of sources AI trusts shows the mix, so you can see whether AI leans on review sites, editorial lists or forums in your market.

Retrieved and cited

Where an assistant's API reports it, Echo also stores the pages the assistant looked at but didn't cite. Retrieved counts those, and citation rate shows how often a retrieved page was cited. Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode don't report retrievals.

Citation gaps

A citation gap is a third-party page AI cites in answers that name a competitor and never you (at least 2 such answers in the period). It's the most direct list of where to get mentioned.

For each gap you see the page, its kind, the competitors named instead, the answers, and whether you're already on the page. Create action turns it into a "get mentioned" action. Every Sunday Echo also creates up to 5 such actions a week by itself, most answers first.

Sources behind a competitor

Under Competition → Competitors, pick a competitor to see which sources AI cites when it names them, and how often those answers name you too. "Only them" means a gap.

Next steps

  • Work through gaps in Mentions, which gives you the steps for each platform and writes the pitch or reply.
  • Pages of yours that AI retrieves but rarely cites are good candidates for improvement.
